How to pronounce some plural nouns

Hi,
I think there must be already a question similar to this but I couldn't find one. So, please explain me again.

There are some nouns which have 'ses' pronounce in the end.
For example: faces, cheeses, houses and so on
What I want to know is how do you distinguish them from other pronunciations of nouns?

I mean for example: hats, guards and so on

Is that because if the nouns end with '-se' or '-ce' their plural pronunciations are with 'ses' ?

Hope I was making the statement clear.
Thanks.

All nouns ending in the "s" sound add the "iz" sound to form the plural. It doesn't matter how the word is actually spelled; it's the sound that counts.

(The same is true for nouns that end in the "z", "ch", "sh", "x", or "j" sound.)

faces, misses, poses, fizzes, witches, riches, wishes, brushes, boxes, grudges
