how to pronounce -man and difficulty

how would you know if the "-man" at the end of a word is stressed or not???

ex. Businessman - "man" here is stressed

while in

Fireman - "man" - the a is a schwa

I don't know if there's a rule here, but i'm really confused.

Another is the word "difficulty". I had a professor(from penn) who said the "-ty" part the way it's pronounced when you say "personality" or "activity". I've always thought it was an aspirated t, or is it???

thanks.

Policeman- stress at the 2 nd syllable Fireman and businessman both have the stress at the 1 st syllable. There is no defined rules for pronunciation. The only way to learn it is to listen and practice more often.

The t in difficulty can be aspirated or neutral (unaspirated).
The t in -ality, -ivity, -icity, etc., can be tapped (sounding like a d) or aspirated or neutral. (A

As a British (English) native, I wouldn't stress any part of "businessman," "fireman" or "policeman"

But your British dictionaries show stress on certain syllables of those words!

Could be a regional thing. I'm from the West Country - everything's a bit soft down here. It's "mun" rather than "man."

Note to all lovers of Merrie England: if there is any stress in "Robin Hood" it emphatically isn't on the Robin part!
