How to pronounce 'L' in "hall", "bold"

Dear all,

I have a challenge with pronouncing the letter "L" in the middle and the end of a word. Can anyone tell me how to pronounce it effectively; and, how to put your tongue when pronounce it.

Thanks,

Quang,

Hi, in American English they're all dark L's, but some L's (like the ones at the end of a syllable) are much more darker than others. I don't know about other dialects. I' sorry, but I don't think I'm able to describe how to pronunce an L.

  • Is there a similar sound in your language?
  • In mine, there are "normal" L's, so I just had to learn how to make them dark.

An L at the end of a word is pronounced differently from that in the beginning or middle of a word. There is a nice description at

Scroll down to "The American L".

Hope this helps.
