How to paraphrase "contribute"

In order to express that carbon footprint of people contributes to the global warming, I wrote the following sentence. Nevertheless, the reason that why I didn't use "contribute" in the sentence is that I've already used that in the above sentences of the essay. Therefore, I would really be grateful if someone could let me know whether the following sentence expresses what I want.
