how to order food

A restaurant has 5 kinds of dinner. Once a party of guests decides to choose one kind everyone has to eat the same kind of dinner.

We had a party of 8 for dinner. I felt so strange when I heard the rule.

So I asked, "is it okay, 3 of us have one kind and 5 of us have another kind?"

How was the question asked? Any better suggestions?

Thanks,

Hi Clive,

Indeed, it's not western style. It's Moroccan but I had it in the States. I wonder that's the common rule in Morocco? Has anyone been to Morocco?

I wouldn't go to another restaurant because it was fun to try different food. It was quite an experience. But it was not cheap. Food + tax + 17% compulsory tip. We spent almost US $350.

Thanks for the reply?

So, did they let your group order two different things?

I think the "compulsory tip" would usually be called a "service charge" -- "Dinner is $35 per person with an 18% service charge." If you are asking is the cost already includes the charge, you could say "is the tip included?"

It can also appear on the bill as a "gratuity"

Restaurants usually add the service charge if there are 6 or more guests.

In addition to the suggestions already given, let me add:

Is it OK for three of us to have one of the choices and five of us to have a different one?

Hi khoff,

You wrote, "So, did they let your group order two different things?"

No. Everyone had the same kind of food. Rule is rule.

They served food with big plates. Each plate had 8 servings.

Each plate was different such as lamb, prawns, chicken...etc.
