how to name this kind of relationship

Any word or phrase to express a relationship where a boy and a girl are more than friends , less than lovers ?

they are good friends and always hanging out together.but neither of them ever confess to the other.not to mention ***

It is very common among Chinese school students. it is not as open as other countries because of heavy family restrictions
