How to memorize words/ vocabs?

One of my English problem is lack of vocabulary. I've tried to write down new words in a notebook with explanation in both English & Chinese. However, after sometime, I found that I almost forgot all. Also, I found that when I use English explanation with sentences (the more I write, the better I can remember the word), I can remember that word for a longer time. Moreover, someone said it was not about how you remember the word, it's about how you can use the word.

If any suggestions can help me efficiently remember/ increase vocabulary? Should I start from specify topics, such as Food, Novels, Movies, News etc? Thanks

Mister MicawberThat doesn't mean you have to say it. It is a matter of frequent encounters: as you read, as you listen, as you write and as you speak, you will meet the word again and again if you do enough of the four skills. The greatest source and the easiest way to meet new words over and over is to read as much as you can.
Thanks for your advice.
