How to make formal from informal style ?

Question

I am doing exercises about academic writing where I need to change words from not formal style to academic style.I have no idea for to this especially in grammar .

the sentence are:
1.This let them keep a constant temperature throughout the experiment.
2.They've got to find out how to conduct a survey on learning capability of little kids.
3.Experts disagree completely on the practice of ethical democracy.
4.You can clearly see the differences between these two learning characteristics.
5.The natural disaster has brought destruction ,loss of lives and et cetera.

Hi

I would say there is no clear difference in English between formal and informal style. I don't really find anything wrong with your sentences (except at -5- you have used 'and et cetera', where the 'et' already stands for 'and'). The sentences can be made more formal, but this is just my own (formal) style...

1.Thus they maintained a constant temperature throughout the experiment.
2.They must establish how best to conduct a survey on the learning capabilities of young children.
3. Experts disagree significantly with regard to the practice of ethical democracy.
4.The differences between these two learning characteristics are quite clear.
5.The natural disaster has brought destruction, loss of lives and other concomitant damage.
