Yes, I also think that these medicines can hurt you, especially those which promise that you will "lose one kilogram every day", this is a real nonsense and really dangerous, I think... But I heard that certain herbal teas (maybe ayurvedis teas or something similar) can help people lose weight... only I don't know if they are suitable for all people.... I wish you good luck!
