How to know if a verb should be followed by gerund or infinitive

Or both? I use "learnersdictionary.com" Merriam-Webster's dictionary; all I can find is if the verb is transitive or intransitive. So, is there any other way I can know from it whether the verb can be followed by a gerund or an infinitive?

Use a search engine such as Google. Look up "catenative verbs". Some websites have lists of verbs that tell you that kind of information.
