how to improve written english?

Hi Everyone

I do read alot and when I don't know a word I look it up in the dictionary, but these new words only stay in my reading vocabulary and it doesn't ever get into my writing or talking vocabulary. My writing is so basic and my vocabulary is quite small. How do I increase my vocabulary in writing and talking?

The only way I know if a sentence is grammatical correct is if I read it and it sounds right and makes sense to me. I am from Australia, so I have grown up with the language which is why I probably could get away with it. When I want to use new words, I don't know how or where to put in the sentence for it to be grammatical correct. I'm not sure what I can do about improving this aspect of my english.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

thank you

Hi Anon! Talking with a native speaker would be the best advise I could give you to improve your english speaking, plus your listening and comprehension skills. As for the vocabulary, yeah, I do the same thing as you do, whenever I come across unknown words to me, I also look it up immediately in the dictionary.

  • Using the words in you own sentences (especially in conversations) will help in retaining the word usage in your memory.
  • I've already asked some friends here in the forum how I could widen my vocabulary and they gave me these answers: read the thesaurus, dictionary, watch english movies, read books(english of course) that are entertaining such as fiction or magazine, or anything that tackles my interest.

If I'm not mistaken, it was Cool Breeze who told me before that I don't really need too much words. For as long as I know how to use the words that I know, and I can express myself, that's fine. One no-no is that never use a word that your aren't sure if it's the correct usage. But of course, it still is helps to have a wide vocabulary. In using new words, you can practise it by constructing s
