How to improve my vocabulary effectively??

My vocabulery is very poor ,and I want to improve it very much,so I read some English written novels,but there were too much words that I cannot understand.

Novels may be a bit too sophisticated for you. Try something written more in th everyday English, such as popular magazines and newspapers. When I find a word I don't know (English or non) I always put a check mark next to it in the dictionary.

When I find a word I don't know (English or non) I always put a check mark next to it in the dictionary. By the time I get three marks, it's time to start using it actively myself so I don't forget it.
