How to improve it?

Almost all animals that hibernate prepare for it during summer by eating large amounts of food, which they convert to thick layers of fat.

I was told that '"it" does not refer to any subject in the sentence.
But how do I make it better?

Top answer

I can understand the complaint, but I don't see a problem using 'it'. You could eliminate "for it". I would add 'the' before summer, however.
