how to generalize 'acronym'?

Hi,

According to my Longman, ACRONYM is a word made up from the first letters of the (combined) name of something.

What is the right term for "sitcom", then (the first THREE letters of one word are followedby the first THREE letters of the other word)?

Hope my question makes sense.

MUSCOVITE Hope my question makes sense. Yes, indeed. I don't think there's a more specific term than 'abbreviation'.

Perhaps 'syllabic abbreviation' would be more specific.
