How to express thoughts in past

Hi.

If I want to say :He wondered "Who am I ?." , which tense below should I use present or past? Though not sure I feel if I choose who he was, it could mean who he had been which is not my intention.

He wondered who he is.
He wondered who he was.

Thank you very much in advance.
