Hi teachers,
Please, I have a question that I'm a bit confused about, and I want to make sure of my understanding. When I want to put something in the place of something else; to replace it.

I substitute a red pen for a blue pen.
My purpose is to use the blue pen; so that's why the red pen was replaced. am I correct in my understanding?
I know that there are other terms to express the meaning but I want to know how to use the verb "substitute' in particular.
Thank you
