How to describe the four orientations of a card?

I'm wondering what are the words to describe the orientations of a playing card when it is rotated 0, 90, 180, 270 degree clockwise? Thanks.

I don't see how you can use any terms other than vertical (upright) and horizontal. I don't have a card in front of me, but I don't think there's any standard feature which distinguished two positions 180 degrees apart. " My understanding is that instructions are given with respect to the player who is playing the card at the time.

  • In that sense, the cards are typically played vertically (in the games I'm familiar with).

In grade school the teacher would say, "Place your papers the tall way."
