how to describe directions?

I have a question about directions. Can you help me with an example
;
Lets say there is a-box . this box has a front side and back-side.
On the back side of the box there are 3 holes.
I want to describe the middle hole. How can i do it?
Here is my try on this subject;
The hole is located middle of back side of the box.

Anonymous On the back side of the box there are 3 holes. But that does not tell us where the holes are; they could all be in one corner. Therefore: The hole is located between the other two holes on the back of the box.

What if these 3 holes are close to eachother and they are located on back side and bottom-right. How can i describe middle hole?
