How to describe an awful-tasting lesson?

I want to say a lesson that feels horrible but teaches a lot. Is there a word or expression to say that? And by lesson, I mean an experience that makes me grow and learn, not really a lesson lesson.

Which wording is better? I want to say: He taught me a lesson that felt really painful(breakup) but rich in content(I learned a lot from the breaking-up experience), and I never fell in love with guys like him after that.

#1) He taught me an awful-tasting but good-in-content lesson, and I never fell in love with guys like him after that.

#2) I learned an awful-tasting but good-in-content lesson from him, and I never fell in love with guys like him after that.
