How to describe

How do you describe this situation?

Two first train cars are jointed, facing each other.

Correct?

Is there other good ones?

Thanks

Yours does not sound good (especially, 'jointed' is wrong). I'd say: The two engines are joined nose-to-nose. However, I'll bet that train workers have their own special term for this common arrangement.

Mister MicawberThe two engines are joined nose-to-nose.
Thanks so much, Mr M.

I think nose-to-nose is a perfect expression!

I understand 'joined' must be used not 'jointed'.

Do you mean by 'engines' that each of them has a powerful engine for the whole train, like TGV whose first car is for an engine and has no passengers

The verb specific to trains being linked togeter is (Link ->) href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coupling (railway)">couple. The engines were coupled nose-to-nose

Hi,
The engines were coupled nose-to-nose
I think I'd more naturally say 'The engines were coupled facing each other'.

Best wishes, Clive

Thanks, A_Stars and Clive.

Thanks for the link about 'coupling'.

Forgetting engines, how about this?

Trains are coupled nose-to-nose/facing each other.

Hi,
You don't normally couple two trains together, especially facing each other.

What would they do, push against each other and go nowhere?

Yeah! That's an unusual situation.
