How to comprehend this sentence

It was with much interest that I read a news item which said that a country rector has received by post an eagle .

How to comprehend the above sentence , what grammar is it ? Is " post " a noun or a verb here ? according to Colloins English Usage , " by " is with an -ing form of verb to say how something is achieved .

Is my grammar correct in my question? If I have made any mistakes please point it out for me. Thanks
