How to begin a characterization

I have to write a characterization, but I don't know how to begin.
my textbook says the first thing that should be mentioned is the name of the person you want to characterize, but I think just saying 'his/her name is...' doesn't sound good.
are there some special expressions I could use?
can I start with something like 'the person I want to characterize is...."?

any help would be appreciated
