How to ask ranks in a race..

i think i can say to an elementary school student, "What grade are you in?" he might say, "5th grade".

Then how can i ask the rank of the runner who just finished the race?

You could ask "Where did you finish?"
In this question "where" means "in what position" - first, second, third, fourth, and so on.
