How to answer question tags?

For question tags, how should I answer them? For instance:

Q: John can swim, can't he?

A: Yes, he can. / No, he can't.

Q: There's an apple, isn't there?

A: Yes, there is. / No, there isn't.

Q: They had a good time, didn't they?

A: Yes, they did. / No, they didn't.

Are those answers correct? Thank you for your help!

Those look all right to me. These are all in the positive, so a simple yes or no would probably do it. It's a little tougher when the question is in the negative - if you say "no" do you mean "yes" or "no"?

  • That's when the "no it isn't" or "yes he did" is really needed for clarity.

Hi, Barbara, you've reminded me the questions I really want to ask. Then if the questions are in the negative, are the following answers still OK?

Q: John can't swim, can he?

A: Yes, he can. / No, he can't.

Q: There isn't any apple, is there?
