How to answer a tag question.

How should we answer a tag question?

For example: The real situation: May is tall.

1. May is tall, isn't she?

2. May isn't tall, is she?

Do those questions have the same answer? (Yes, she is) because I heard that tag question answer should reflect the real situation?

Thanks in advace.

Another way of looking at it: use the form (tense, negative/affirmative, etc.) as the original sentence before the tag ending.

1. Yes, she is.

2. No, she isn't.

[In some languages, the 'yes' or 'no' indicates that whatever the tag says is true or not. This can be very confusing if the first language and the target language differ.]

Philip2. No, she isn't.
But in the example given, Mary is tall. How would you answer "Mary isn't tall, is she?" given that Mary is actually tall?

AnonymousNo, she is.
That might work with a certain inflection,
but I believe most native speakers would say,
"Yes, she is," or even "Oh yes, she is!" with a contradictory inflection.
