how to answer

When teaching written English which is the correct way to answer:

Q. Why did Mary go shopping?
A. To buy fruit.
or
Q. Why did Mary go shopping?
A. She went shopping to buy fruit.

Q. Why did Tom go to London?
A. To see his friend.
or
Q. Why did Tom go to London?
A. He went to London to see his friend.

Joe Kerr which is the correct way to answer You may specify for your students that you want the answers to be written as complete sentences, or you may specify to your students that you want the answers to be those which are given in ordinary conversations, using only relevant phrases and not repeating obvious elements from the question. The teacher should make it clear which type of answer is expected in each exercise. Sometimes one type of answer may be used; sometimes another type may be used.

When I was younger, I'm sure I was taught "To go shopping" etc is incorrect. Interesting.

Very interesting indeed. I go shopping several times a week, and nobody ever bothers me about it.

or
