how stacked the odds were

They never indulged in self-pity, no matter how stacked the odds were against them. They didn't quit.

I think this sentence is talking about these guys don't give up, no matter how hard it is. But I don't know what 'odd' and 'stack' mean here. I consider them as a idiomatic way to express. Could you show me the specific meaning of these words?

"Odds" is a gambling term, how likely something is to happen. Stacking odds increases unlikelyhood. "Odds stacked against them" means that they are facing something very difficult/unlikely.
