02br 02br 00 To a friend: Dear Friend or Dear (put here the first name of your friend). You could use the first name at the beginning of the letter after Dear to show that you are on familiar and friendly terms with the person. This would be very informal.

Dear Professor ***,

Don't continue by saying 'Hello'. It's not necessary, and looks odd.

What are you going to write at the end of the letter?

Actually, even though we call it a "salutation", "salute" usually isn't used to refer to it. In AmEng, at least, we use "greeting". "Salute" is more like a physical action that shows respect to a superior or to the flag.

Thanks, Clive. Something like 'Greetings' or 'Best wishes'. The letter was quite informal.
