[how much/what is]

I have made up the questions below.

(1a) How much is the membership fee?

(2a) How much is the monthly rent?

My non-native English speaking friends think "how much" is wrong. Their revision is given below.

(1b) What is the memebership fee?

(2b) What is the monthly rent?

A few of my friends think both "how much" and "what is" are okay. What is your opinion? Thank you.
