How much were they or are they?

Hi,
When my friends bought me a pair of shoes, and he delievered to my place by mail. When I talked to him by email, should I say," how much were they?" or "how much are they?" Since he did the action, should it be past tense? If it isn't used properly, please correct me.

Thanks,
