How much serious abuse wanker is?

In my dictionary, wanker is
"a very offensive word for a boy or man who you think is stupid or unpleasant. Do not use this word"

I know this is abouse. But I don't know how much serious it is and why it is abuse especially for man.
I'm not joking and I'm not intended,
I'm just studying English with movie script.

A "******" is basically the British-English equivalent for the word "jerk" (which is now mostly used in American-English speaking countries).
The word "******" might have evolved from the word "jerk" which was probably an onomatopoeia (making a new word to describe a sound) for the action of pulling something fast and continuously, and therefore came to describe the male masturbation.

Clive In . America, the term '******' is not very common. I think some people might not know what it means.

In Britain it is very widely known (and, unfortunately, used) and is highly offensive.

What about plonker? I know it was heavily used in Only fools and horses so I guess it's not as offensive as ******.
