How much is/are + 2 unrelated products

For asking the price of two products, would you use is or are?

e.g. How much is/are the book and the stapler? (at the checkout counter)

I searched the forum but I didn't find "How much is/are" explained in this context.

Its not the same as ordering a hamburger and fries, where the two items are a unit, but I still think it should be "is", as the question is asking for the total.
