How much is it?

Could you tell me whether the question below is correct in this context?

I am holding a wad of paper money in my hand and ask my friend to guess " how much is it? Or should I say "How much are these?"

Is "it" in the above question = this amount of money?

Is "it" pronominal or dummy in that question?

Thanks!
