Is my sentence proper English?

When I was a kid , I often got a poor grade in math, and I didn't care about it. But ,one day my mother asked me how much the top student got in a class.

In addition, I would probably use the plural: 'I often got poor grades in math'. Then I'd have to pluralize 'it' to 'them' or delete the prepositional phrase:

When I was a kid, I often got poor grades in math, and I didn't care. But one day, my mother asked me what grades the top student got.
