How much different between "have you ever been there" and " have you been there"?

HI.

I have some question when I reading a English book.
Here, how much different between "have you ever been" and "have you been " in nuance?
"I want to feel the nuance about the "ever".

I think the "ever" has the same mean which is "once".
Does it make sense? I have no idea.

Thanks
