how may I direct your call

What's the meaning of "How may I direct your call"?

It's weird. I would answer, "Use your finger to press the extension number".
Could you give me a scenario the expression is used?

Thanks.

It means "Who / what department would you like to speak to?"

Scenario: someone calls a company and the switchboard operator answers.

Operator: Acme Widgets, how may I direct your call?

Caller: I'd like to speak to Mr So-and-so please.
