How Many'th?

Dear all,

In English, for example say someone is answering "Tony is the 15th prime minister of England". For this what should be the question? In my language, we have a word for this to ask. It is something like HOW MANY'TH in english. Is there anything in English for this?

Regards,
Asik.

1. Which prime minister, chronologically/in chronological order, was Tony Blair?

2. Name the UK prime ministers in chronological order?

The first does sound a bit awkward, doesn't it?

Necessity is the mother of invention. People not necessarily known for their language skills have created words when they were needed: Nixon's "vietnamization" comes to mind. It seems to me that we should be able to

I swear we should just put this one on the FAQs.

hi friends,
i feel it becomes very easy when u ask
"what is the cardinal order of Mr. tony among the prime ministers of UK?"
0
The good news: The term for this is "ordinal".

The bad news: Most English speakers don't know the word "ordinal". I didn't until I heard it on a game show.

I might say: "By (chronological) order, which (number) prime minister was Tony?"

I have a suggestion:

What is President Obama's ordinal number in the order of succession?

What do you think?

We do have the answer. It's the same answer given a few years ago.

There is no way to ask the question neatly. That is the answer.
