How many words does an american have?

in daily conversation,how many words should be known?do ordinary american people read the broadsheets such as washington post,the economist smoothly?i have learnt english for some years and have no significant progress.i read a lot but still run into many new words when i thumb through the economist.how can i improve my english.i speak indigenous chinese.
