How many wives does this guy have?

Bill arrived at 9pm along with his most beautiful wife.

Hi SF Interesting question. I'd guess that Bill has just one wife -- and that she is very beautiful. The word 'most' can be used to mean 'very'.

Hi guys,

Perhaps there is an implicit suggestion here that there are many wives in the world, but that his is the most beautiful?

Clive, you are right! It can also be one.

Hello Stupid Fool,

This is called the "absolute superlative", used when no comparison is being made, (as opposed to the "comparative superlative" which is used in conjunction with a category or class). In English there is no difference between the way the absolute and the comparative superlatives are formed so the key is context.

Is there also an "absolute comparative" and a "comparative comparative"?

How about - no bigger a fool than he and most foolish among the stupider of the fools?

Sometimes there is a difference, sometimes there isn't. Some say that there is no absolute superlative in English at all! An example of a difference (in my opinion, anyway):

Relative superlative: It's the most

I hadn't noticed that before CB.
Stupid FoolIs there also an "absolute comparative"
Maybe there is; what about expressions like: "the lower classes"?
