How many types are there?

Hi,

How do we know when to use the word "type" or "types" in these kinds of situations?

type of mistakes -- These are the type of mistakes they make.

I think, if they consistently make the same mistake, you need to say "This IS the TYPE of MISTAKE they make" - it's singular all the way though.

Is "mistake" a count noun or a non-count noun? If it is a count noun, it can't appear in a sentence "bare", it must be preceeded by an article, a pronoun, a numeral, or followed by -s. Therefore, "a type of mistake" an "types of mistake" don't seem to be the correct use of "mistake". I often see the phrase "type of mistake"
