How many sentences are correct?

1."I figured it'd be fun while I conduct research in the arctic"

2."I figured it'd be fun while conducting research in the arctic"

3."I figured it'd be fun conducting research in the arctic"

4."I figured it'd be fun while I'm conducting research in the arctic"

Yes. But 2 and 3 are not very natural.

I once heard a native say the phrase

"I idolized him growing up"

Does this mean this sentence is also not natural since he omitted the while word even though that kind of structure is accepted by the society?
