How many hours were you working?

Let's imagine my friend has just come back home from his work. I would like to ask him a question. What tense should I use? How many hours were you working today? How many hours had you been working today?

Thanks for help

If he has finished for the day, I'd use simple past: How many hours did you work today? If he is still at it, I'd use present continuous: How many hours are you working today? / How many hours are you scheduled to work today?
