How many hours?

This question is bugging me for a while now: how many hours of deliberate practice (listening/speaking/reading/writing) does it really take for students of English as a second language to be almost native-line fluent, as for the most students this seems to be the ultimate goal?

Doing some estimated calculations with some friends of mine who are very proficient in English, some of them are in fact native-like fluent, we came up with results between 7000 and 9000 hours of deliberate language practice, which includes high school English classes, homework, college classes, reading, watching movies in English etc.

I would like to hear your opinion on that topic, maybe you can make some estimation yourself on how much time (in hours) you spend in total so far with English?

Somewhere I read (and often repeat) that it takes 700-800 class hours to go from zero to Basic English communication. I use the figure as a warning to beginners to be patient and understand how long it takes to acquire a language and that there are no shortcuts.
