How Many Earls?

There has been some discussion in the TLS recently regarding the punctuation of Earls Court. The area and the exhibition hall do not have an apostrophe, whereas the Earl's Court Road and Earl's Court underground station do. Comments, anyone?

Your message is about an apostrophe. Your subject line is about a plural.

Omitting an apostrophe opens an ambiguity. And does the name refer to the Earls of Oxford, Holland or Warwick?
