How long was I in there?

I was in there for 20 minutes.

Consider the above line. The "question form" on "20 minutes" should be like this:

How long was I in there?

My question is: why does the "for" disappear here?

Thanks a lot.

The for is optional in both the statement and the question form.

I was in there for 20 minutes. I was in there 20 minutes.
How long was I in there for? How long was I in there?
For how long was I in there? How long was I in there?
