I have to say, the first two replies changes the entire meaning of the sentence.

it's better to use 'did' than 'had', because it is already apparent that we are taking about the period of a certain action, as we can assume from the phrase how long. had is used only to express a certain action/incident which happens after another action ended in the past. As you got only one
