How long, How much longer

One of my reference books says that "how" can be followed by "long" (you can say "how long"), but "how" can't be followed by "longer" directly so that you say "ho much longer".

Is it due to comparative form?
When using comparative form, I should "how much + comparative" instead of "how + comparative"??

Examples like: how much better..., how much sooner...

Can you also tell me other examples??

Thank you in advance!
