How long has it been raining?

I am often confused with prepositions. A sentence like this, would it be wrong to add 'for' after 'raining'?

How long has it been raining for?
How long have you lived here for?

Please advise. Thanks for your help!!! (I like this forum alot. )

No, it's not wrong, but we usually drop the 'for' that goes with "How long?" at the beginning.

Not dropping 'for' at the end sounds a little clumsy to native speakers, but some people do say 'for' at the end.

Oh, I see. You have solved one of my long run curiosities! Thanks a lot. I found this forum fantastic really. Having lived in Australia for a decade, I am still not confident in my English. Not much issues in general conversation, but found it very difficult to answer when someone (students in non-English speaking country) asks me questions regarding English grammar.
