How long + for

I think 'how long' involves the meaning of 'for.'
So, we don't say "How long does it take to finish your work for?" or "How long does it take to go to the airport for?"; but "How long does it take to finish your work?" or "How long does it take to go to the airport?"
However, yesterday, I found the following sentence which goes against this idea.
Could you tell me why I should use 'for' in the sentence?
Thank you.

If I sign some books out, how long do I get to keep them for?
