How know when I have to use the simple past or the participles present

Hi everyone, Someone can tell me when I have to use the participle present? I can't find out this simple answer, should I say, I forgot or I've forgotten?

Thanks!

"I forgot" uses the simple past tense; "I've forgotten" uses the present perfect. Neither of these is the present participle. The simple past tells about factual situation in the past; the present perfect tells about a completed event in the past.
